Delivering Critical Water Infrastructure
When Sunchild First Nation needed reliable treated-water storage and distribution for a new subdivision, the project team faced more than a treatment challenge. The solution had to meet an accelerated funding and delivery schedule, accommodate the realities of a remote Alberta location, minimize winter construction, and provide a facility that would be practical for operators to maintain over the long term.
Working collaboratively with Sunchild First Nation and Associated Engineering, Flowpoint Environmental Systems designed and fabricated a fully integrated modular water treatment, storage and distribution facility. By allowing site preparation and facility fabrication to proceed in parallel, the project moved from the beginning of the partnership in August 2025 to full commissioning in February 2026 — 220 days later.
The Challenge
Sunchild First Nation required reliable treated-water storage and distribution infrastructure to support a new subdivision. Meeting that need involved several project constraints simultaneously.
The community was working within an accelerated funding and delivery timeline. The site was remote. Construction would extend into the Alberta winter. Mechanical, electrical, process and controls systems all had to work together. All the while, the finished facility also needed to provide appropriate access for operation and long-term maintenance.
A conventional site-built approach would require many activities to happen sequentially. Building construction would need to progress before much of the mechanical, process, electrical and controls work could begin.
At a remote site, winter conditions, labor availability and coordination among multiple trades could add further uncertainty.
The project team needed a way to reduce onsite complexity without compromising the functionality of the finished facility.
The Solution
Rather than considering storage, treatment, pumping and controls as separate components, the project team approached the facility as a complete integrated system.
Sunchild First Nation established the community and operational priorities. Associated Engineering developed the design basis and site integration requirements. Flowpoint translated those requirements into a modular facility that could be fabricated, integrated, and tested offsite. The completed facility incorporates:
- Multi-stage cartridge filtration
- Sodium hypochlorite dosing
- Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection
- Approximately 30 m³ of treated-water storage
- Duty and standby distribution pumps
- Integrated controls and alarms
- Standby power generation
The team incorporated all of these systems into a single transportable module. Designing the facility as an integrated package also allowed Flowpoint to consider equipment access, piping, electrical separation, chemical containment, control visibility, and maintenance clearances as part of a single coordinated design.

Building the Facility While the Site Was Prepared
A major advantage of the modular approach was the ability to work on two fronts at once. While foundation construction and utility preparation progressed at Sunchild First Nation, Flowpoint fabricated the treatment facility in a controlled shop environment.
Structural, process, mechanical, electrical and controls work could therefore advance independently of site conditions.
This parallel approach helped shorten the project's critical path while reducing the amount of complex construction required at the remote site during winter.
It also shifted important decisions earlier in the project.
Equipment selection helped establish the facility footprint, electrical loads, process connections, maintenance requirements and transportation envelope. Long-lead equipment could be released while detailed design and site work continued.

Testing Before the Facility Reached the Site
Before shipment, the completed integrated modular water treatment facility underwent factory acceptance testing. The process involved participation from Flowpoint, Associated Engineering, Indigenous Services Canada, and Sunchild First Nation operators and management.
Testing the integrated system before transportation allowed the project team to review equipment operation, controls and alarms while the facility was still in the shop.
Any deficiencies identified at this stage could be addressed in a controlled environment rather than during the limited onsite commissioning window.
Factory testing also gave the people who would ultimately operate and support the facility an opportunity to see the system functioning before delivery.

Designed for Transportation and Installation
With modular infrastructure, transportation is part of the engineering process — not simply the final step.
Module dimensions, shipping weight, equipment placement, lifting requirements, transportation routes, permits, utility connection points and weather protection all had to be considered during design.
Sunchild First Nation received the completed facility in early February 2026.
Because the foundation and utilities had already been prepared, the module could be positioned and aligned upon arrival. The team completed weather sealing and mechanical and electrical connections within a matter of days, followed shortly by startup and commissioning.

Site preparation and facility fabrication progressed simultaneously rather than sequentially.
Early Coordination
Major equipment, interfaces, loads and connection requirements were established early enough to support fabrication and site work.
Integrated Fabrication
The team assembled the process, mechanical, electrical, and controls systems in a controlled environment.
Factory Testing
Equipment, controls and alarms could be reviewed before the facility was transported to the site.
Reduced On-Site Complexity
A substantial portion of the work normally completed by multiple trades in the field arrived as an integrated, tested facility.
Owner Involvement
Sunchild First Nation operators and management remained involved throughout the process. Ultimately, they helped to keep operational requirements and community priorities visible during delivery.
The Final Result
The Sunchild First Nation project progressed from the start of the partnership in August 2025 to a fully commissioned modular water treatment facility in February 2026. This took a total of 220 days. The project demonstrated how an integrated modular delivery model can help accelerate water infrastructure when schedule, location and construction conditions make conventional delivery more challenging.

More Than an Integrated Modular Water Treatment Building
The Sunchild First Nation project illustrates an important distinction: modular construction alone does not accelerate a project.
Successful modular delivery depends on early decisions, clearly defined responsibilities, coordinated interfaces, and close communication among the owner, consulting engineer, and equipment manufacturer.
When those elements are in place, modular water infrastructure can serve remote and weather-exposed sites. It can further meet fixed delivery windows, reduce reliance on specialized trades in locations where they are scarce, and accommodate treatment applications within a compact facility.
For Sunchild First Nation, that approach brought treatment, storage, pumping, controls, and standby power together in a single integrated facility, initially designed around the site's needs and delivered on an accelerated schedule.
